<VV> BRAKE PROBLEM
Hi ya'll,
I've been receiving and enjoying the posts on VV for quite a while now, but
until now I've never felt the need to send a message. Now I do. I discovered my
'65's RR wheel cylinder was leaking last week. The cylinder could not have
leaked more than a day or two before I discovered it because I had just
previously been under the car and would have noticed. My mechanic repaired the
wheel cylinder yesterday, and we checked all the brakes. All linings and drums
look new, no other brake cylinders leaking.
Here's the problem: we cleaned the brake fluid off the shoes and drum as
well as we could with Berryman's B-12, but unless the brakes are hot from heavy
use, the RR wheel is locking up long before the others even come into play. The
mechanic says if it doesn't get better from use, the shoes will have to be
changed, and I agree. But I've just joined the North Texas Corvair Assn. and
already have reservations for an overnight trip with the club next weekend, Nov.
13 & 14, and I need the car fixed by then. Do I need to send in a "rush" " next
day air" order for new shoes to a vendor or does anyone know of a temporary fix
for the old shoes?
I've never run into this problem before because I always did a complete
brake job anytime a cylinder started leaking, but this car had a complete brake
job shortly before I bought it in July, and everything else looks good. Thanks
in advance for helping a "newbie" to VV.
