Re: <VV> Ideal Tires for EMs, Highway Travel,
To the first question; the 185/80 are about right giving a dia. of 24.7
inches the stock 6.40 x 13 were about 24.1 tall. The springs are known to
sag so use the shop manual to check the ride height to be sure. As for the
rpm problem: the standard rear gear with a 4-sp was a 3.55. That would
give 2,904 rpm at 60 mph and even if you have an optional 3.89 that would
be only 3,182 rpm at 60. The short stroke engines live quite happily
at 3,500 rpm and many people regularly cruse at 4,000 rpm with no ill
engine effects (the gas mileage does suffer, however). So I would not
worry if I kept the speed under 75 with a 3.89 or 80 with a
3.55. Powerglides came with 3.27, usually, so the same figures apply. In
1964 I drove a 62 Monza Convertible all over NM, TX and AZ at 75 to 90 mph
with the day temps in the high 90's. I sold the car in 65 with 86,000 miles
and the engine was still running strong.
