<VV> Creepy Wheelcovers
At the risk of cluttering the list at the start of the Communique delivery
complaint period, I pose this new query. I don't recall seeing anything on
this subject in previous VV correspondence, nor in the Tech Guide.
My '62 Monza has the Early Fake Wire Wheelcovers. The one on the right rear
creeps around the wheel slightly as I drive. I have reinstalled it 3 times
in the last few weeks. Each time I carefully center the tire valve stem in
the clearance notch of the wheelcover. But after driving some distance
(approximately 100 miles last time) it has moved to the point that the notch
is pushing against the side of the valve stem, pushing it sideways
noticeably. I'm afraid it is going to cut thru the valve stem or break it
off if it keeps moving (it has already cut or at least dented it). The
other 3 wheelcovers seem to stay put.
Has anyone else experienced this? Who knows how to make it sit still?
Thanks

<VV> Re: Creepy Crawly Wheelcovers
To get the hub cap to sit still simply say....Stay! Hubcap Stay!!! Use a
forceful tone, shake your pointing finger at it, and of course, there may be a
short training period involved. Be advised however that they will never be
fully trained... if they come off the rim they don't come home by
themselves...even if only a 1/2 block away.
If this doesn't work you my have a rare case of valve stem /hubcap hole
misalignment (re-drill the rim or elongate the hubcap hole until mit stops
moving. Also it is possible that the offending hubcap on the "right rear" may
actually be a "left front" hubcap...try swapping hubcaps (they are marked at
the factory, but it wears off shortly after leaving the dealership)...if the
hubcap doesn't like any of your cars rims...get another car (the cars are easier
to fine and some are cheaper than the hubcaps).

Oh yes... all the time.

Well, on my Spyder with the wire wheelcovers, I managed to get the ones on
the rear (the worst offenders) to stay put by bending the tangs on the
covers so they gripped the wheel tighter. It made them harder to get off
but they stopped creeping around, snagging the valve stems.
I've seen this sort of thing on most cars with wheelcovers and not
necessarily Corvairs. Evidently heavy wheelcovers are more prone to this,
logic suggesting that wheel rotation speed variations might tend to "jerk"
the covers as the car brakes on rough roads causing the wheels to
intermittently stop and start as they "chirp" their way over bumps as the
car slows. At least this is what I concluded.

Re: <VV> Creepy Wheelcovers
You might try taking a file or Dremel tool and making a small gouges in the
rims where the tangs will be so that they will catch in the gouges when they
spin.

Re: <VV> Creepy Wheelcovers
doug- the fix is going to be an all metal valve stem which is retained by a
small nut- much lile the radio shafts. these are commonly availible for
'custom' wheels. once the wheel cover bumps that it can go no further, and
it won't hurt the valve.
i was never real fond of those eaerly covers- they look ok, but they are so
'flimsy'- i have had several 'explode' over the years as they pop off from a
bump then the spot welds break and the pieces fly in 3 directions....

Re: <VV> Creepy Wheelcovers
Hey Doug, Center it again! Be very careful to line up the notch
in the wheel cover and the valve stem. Now DON'T drive it and it
will stay just right!!!<GGG> OR, make sure you back up as much as
you go foward........<GGG>. Maybe you are missing one or more of the
tangs that grip the rim or maybe one is bent or maybe that rim is bent
or maybe you have a greasy rim or WHEW this is wearing me out. Well
try all those and let us know????
