Re: <VV> Powerglide adjustments

Dorai,

Does it downshift harshly (with a lurch) when you are slowing down to a

stop? If so, then you probably have a vacuum leak in the line from the carb

crossover down to the vacuum modulator on the transmission. Each end of this

line has a rubber hose which can easily deteriorate and leak, causing harsh

upshifts and downshifts. If this is NOT your problem, you probably have the

idle speed too high. Frequently the fast idle on the chokes brings in too

high a "cold" idle speed. If the situation you describe gets better when the

engine is fully warmed, then cold idle speed is at least part of the problem.

GM seemed to believe that all Corvair owners lived in northern Canada and

needed lots of choke and high cold idle speeds. I would set the chokes only

rich enough to enable cold weather driving without stalling in your

particular region. I've had other carbureted cars besides the Corvair that

had way too much choke and cold idle speed even for northern NJ. More modern

cars with computer controlled idle speeds and more sophisticated ambient

temperature sensing are much better in this regard.

See if you can get a tachometer and a vacuum gauge on the engine to

assist in getting both the hot and cold idle speeds as low as possible. It

does require a lot of back and forth adjustment to accomplish this, however.

Good luck,

Frank Burkhard
