WC: Steering Box Troubles (Attn Joe Mac)

Hey All,
I've known for a while that my steering box needed to be replaced. It has
always been what can only kindly be described as "loose" or "numb" or
"lacking any hint of on centre feel" - you get my drift.
But in the last three days it has seriously gone downhill. Turning left
remains exactly as it has always been. However turning the wheel right has
gotten downright scary.
Where the wheel used to flop back and forth equally between the 10 and 2
positions, not the right will turn all the way to the 5 o'clock positions.
Worse, the effort needed to turn right requires actually hauling on the
wheel. And it makes a heck of a screeching noise when turning at slow
speeds. It comes right up through the steering wheel. As a matter of fact,
I can't tell if noise is coming up from the steering box THROUGH the
steering column or whether it is emenating from the steering column/wheel
itself.
Obviously I won't be driving it again until this problem is fixed.
I've gotten my hands on a quick box that I'm going to give a rebuild to
before I put it in the car. But, I wondering two things.
Number 1: Is the screeching noise indicitive of something else that I should
be replacing at the same time?
Number 2: What type of failure in the steering system would result in this
increased difficulty turning right, and the extra slop in the wheel to the
right?
I should mention that a quick visual inspection shows that the alignment
looks good. I don't recall hitting or bumping anything (no DeckRug Ultra
Alignments preformed in other words<g>) and the car still tracks straight as
an arrow on flat roads.
ATTN JOE MAC: Do you know if a rebuild kit is locally available for a '66
quick box?

Joel
