I would think that if your camshaft showed damage- ussually the mating lifter
wear surface will show damage also.

I have seen severely cupped lifters and lifters which were pitted without
replacing the camshaft. They seem to have worked fine, even if it is not the
best practice.

>Can I use uni-lug washers and tapered lug nuts? How do I ensure the wheels

Well that is a definite maybe.

The first issue is that GM wheels are designed to register on the hubs for
centering however many years of aftermarket wheels and people running
spacers (about 3 mm is the max to keep the hub register) have centered on
the lugs without problem.

The lug nut issue is simple - you need long shank lug nuts designed for mag
wheels DO NOT try to use acorn seat (standard GM) nuts or you will ruing
the wheels (or at least the unilugs). Long shank nuts extend into the wheel
to provide both a centering surface and allow enough threads to be engaged
for safety.

So many thousands of people have used that kind of wheel happily and id it
doesn't vibrate you are golden. Just make sure you get the right lug nuts
for the wheel.

Was just playing with the idle again tonight and went through a period
where it would be at 600 in D, then drop to 350, then come back to 600 and
cycle like that for a while. Juggling the mixture has no discernable
effect. Change with Pertronix is that it does not stall at 350, just keeps
running.

Incidently I ran some tests and the Ignitor II with .6 ohm Coil is pulling
.7a - 700 rpm
.9 - 1000
1.3 - 1500
1.7 - 2000
2.0 - 2500 (end of scale on dwell/tach)
so expect it would peak at 4 amps at 5000 rpm with about 3a at 3500 (70
mph). Talked with Pertronix and they feel the stock 18 gauge wiring is
adequate for mild street use and this test seems to corroberate.

What I am now wondering is that while there are no additional sounds if the
noisy idler is eliminated when it drops from 600 to 350 is it possible
that one or more lifters stop opening valves at low rpm ? Valves were
adjusted quite a bit tighter when I bought the car. Everything comes right
back given a little throttle. Are now adjusted at 1/4 turn from clack warm.
Am tempted to add another 1/4 turn across the board and see if anything
happens but thought I would ask if am just grasping at straws.

I think you should buy a milkshake to go with the straws! gg

I usually slow the idle way down [ 400rpm] when dealing with weird
lifters....and adjust HOT-Running with a Valve cover with holes cut for
adjusting.....the engines always idle fine....

Get another carb from someone and change it out....one or the other is
bad....

Or take the 6 hours to swap the heads with a set of good checked out ULTRA
quality heads from a club memeber. Get rid of those bad guides, and enjoy
the car.

Matt,

Where does one obtain these valve covers to cut holes. Asked sometime
back and didn't receive a single reply on used valve covers that someone
wanted to get rid of. Would like a pair but will settle for one.

FWIW, I made mine by bolting an 'ok' one to a head, then sliding the head on a block w/ no jugs, and tapped the area where the lower studs hit the valve cover to mark stud location...then drilled those spots w/ 1/2" drill;;used a rocker ball with my Harborfreight balljoint svc (big c-clamp) tool to push each hole OUTWARDS...Keith,send me yours and $49.95,and I'll do one for you (;>)...such a deal,eh? You make them! just measure the 6 rocker studs.....cut 1" holes in
cover....

I like these better than the half covers...you can reve the engine!

i figured so many would respond that i shoul;d lay low on this one. i can
send covers for a small fee to cover shipping etc if needed. now for a few
dollars more i will make some with the holes in them. i prefer full covers with
holes in them and gasket glued on against the 1/3 covers. or i thin k i made a
set or 2 with the center cut out. that works ok also , but is more work to make
, unless i do it with a torch (sloppy but works). i am located in central ny
area.

So, cut a used one lengthwise down the center. That way you can install
both at once and take care of both sides without turning off and
re-starting.
