<VV> lifters... How does one remove them?
Message-ID: <4A02EF18-863E-4F1E-B78E-42FFD296427E@sbcglobal.net>
Now that both heads are off. I might as well replace the old steel
head gaskets with the spiffy copper ones and replace the lifters. The
only problem is that I can't get the old lifters out. They come right
to the edge and then hang up. I've tried magnets and tried hooking
the edge of a small flat blade screwdriver but no luck.
Is there a trick to removing these?

I have had success in removing stuck lifters by taking a piece of stiff wire
and bending it in a U shape and putting the wire in the lifter bore next to
the stuck lifter and working out the stuck lifter with the shaped wire.
However, for this to work you have to get out at least one lifter. Good
luck. Dennis Dorogi

Spray the lifter bore at the end that it needs to come out of with carb
cleaner, then just work the lifter back and forth. There's a ring of varnish
holding them in. The carb cleaner will dissolve it.

Several ways. but why are you replacing them? Shouldn't be necessary. If the
feet are worn, then so is the cam!!!
Nothern Tool Supply sells a neat tool for grabbing on the lifter and hanging
on so you can pull it out. About $23. Another way is to get some "piano wire"
from a music shop. It is hard stuff. Bend the end over 90 deg and hook that
end into the top of the lifter and pull the lifter out.

Never had trouble with removing Corvair lifters..........Yet!
But have had plenty of trouble removing small block chevy lifters over the
years. Sometimes these lifters are slightly "peaned" over. I actually have a
tool (from Snap-on) which will grip the rim inside the lifter and use to
work the lifter out. In extreme situations have had to remove the guts of
the lifter to get a more solid grip.
Many years ago the cams wore poorly on the SBC and the lifters were junk
too.

I am replacing the lifters because all the the motor I've had so far
that had a lot of miles on them had lifters that bled out overnight
or at least in a couple of days and then they rattle a bang for 5 or
10 minutes until they fill up with oil again. I figured new ones
would solve that problem. Is this a orientation problem and will
happen with all lifters new or old?

If you'll just crank the engine until the oil light extinquishes...pump the
throttle to set the chokes....never a clatter...
THIN oils bleed down fast!! but pump up quicker... Horizontal
orientation is the culprit!

Running a quart low can cause this problem too.

Old heater control cables make excellent "piano wire" hooks, even have
a little loop in the end for a small screwdriver "handle" to help pull.
